We saw our lovely midwife today… it was a funny appointment. We walked in with a list of questions and things we have been debating about. I’ll start with the end of the appointment and then go through our list and her answers.
For the first time we got the fundal height measurement (from pelvic bone to the top of the uterus) I had suspected going in today that I was big. Well I measured at 21weeks – 3 weeks ahead… The most obvious answers for this are all ruled out – 1. we have the conception date wrong. 2. gestational diabetes (passed my glucose test) 3. excessive weight gain (I gained 2 pounds in the last 6 weeks) She didn’t seem worried about it, but we have a 20 week ultrasound coming up soon. I can’t say I feel great about it – but I am trusting her judgment.
The List
Itching/Poison Ivy
So over the last week I have developed the worst case of poison ivy ever. Not in terms of area, but in depth of the yuckiness. I only have it between two fingers, but some of the boils have boils. I’ve also been insanely itchy over the past few weeks. Last night I didn’t go to sleep till 2 because i was itching….everywhere. So her answer was it is likely just my new allergy reaction to pregnancy, but just in case it is something else I had to give blood. Which for the second time the technician has struggled to find a vein… On the poison ivy – she reminded me my immune system is suppressed and suggested a benadr.yl cream and patience. I’ve been good in not scratching too much.
Medicine
We chatted about this again to help A. and I meet in the middle in terms of taking medicine. She was a great tie breaker and basically said I could take up to the recommended daily dose of tylen.ol and benadryl to sleep without feeling bad about it. Tums are okay too but if I use them too frequently – she would rather prescribe something that is a bit more effective.
Working Out
Again a fantastic tie breaker. I wasn’t a big work out person before so I wanted to be sure I wasn’t pushing it. But she identified clearly where I could push and where I shouldn’t and really said basically, trust and listen to your body and do what it says. Be mindful of the belly and the heart rate.
Paint
I lost. She said to stay away.
Back and Tail – Bone pain
She gave me a referral to a chiropractor. She said if I was having trouble this early I’ll likely need to go to the doc before this is all over. On the random tail bone pain (which I had an episode of pre-suki-dot without any solution) turns out I likely broke it at some point and the progesterone is pulling and tugging and moving my pelvis around which is putting pressure on it. Again – yoga and chiropractor.
So I am hanging in there. I’ve felt the cute babe move a few times. I’m not too tired or too hungry. I am getting rather round but for the meantime it is staying right in the belly area and isn’t spreading out everywhere. So basically I am pregnant. I am so excited for the ultrasound in 2 weeks… i think that will comfort us both greatly. I love hearing the little one’s heartbeat, but I’d like to see some limbs and a head…
